Flounder have adapted well to living and feeding on the bottom of the ocean and typically feed on flat, sandy bottoms. In order to best catch them, you may need to use a flicker rig!
Materials Needed for a Flicker Rig
In order to assemble a flicker rig, you will need a list of materials in order to get started.
- First, you will need a monofilament fishing line for the leader line.
- Next, get yourself an egg or bullet sinker (0.5 ounces will work), a barrel swivel, and a bright-colored foam or cork float.
- You will also need four small plastic beads, most of the time these tend to be red in color.
- Lastly, you will need a small chrome or brass spinner blade and hook.

How to Tie a Flicker Rig
The flicker rig takes a few steps to assemble, but it is still very easy to do.
First, you will need to put the sinker on your main fishing line, then attach the end of the mainline to a barrel swivel. Next, you will need to cut a two-foot-long section of the leader line and attach one end to the swivel.
This next step is critical to get everything in the correct order. You will want to slide the following items onto the leader with first, the float, then two beads, the spinner blade, then another two beads.
Once all of these items are on the leader, you can tie the hook on the end with a good knot. After that, all you need to do is bait the hook and you are ready to go fishing!
Final Thoughts
The flicker rig is a very effective rig that works well in all depths of water. You can use it for many other species, and not just flounder either!
